OpenAI Strikes Deal to Acquire Startup Windsurf for $3 Billion

OpenAI Expands Its Reach with Major Acquisition

OpenAI has reached an agreement to acquire Windsurf, an AI-powered coding tool formerly known as Codeium, in a deal worth approximately $3 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter. This marks OpenAI’s largest acquisition to date.

While the deal has yet to be finalized, OpenAI and Windsurf have declined to comment. The acquisition could bolster OpenAI’s position in the competitive market for AI-driven coding assistants, which generate code based on natural language inputs. Bloomberg News previously reported that discussions between the two companies were underway.

Windsurf, originally known as Exafunction Inc., had been negotiating funding rounds with investors including Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst, targeting a $3 billion valuation. Last year, it was valued at $1.25 billion in a funding round led by General Catalyst.

The AI-driven coding space is growing, with competitors like Anthropic and Microsoft-owned GitHub already offering similar tools. Investors have also been backing new startups, such as Anysphere, the company behind Cursor.

Meanwhile, OpenAI recently secured a $40 billion financing deal led by SoftBank Group Corp., pushing its valuation to $300 billion. On Monday, OpenAI announced it was reversing plans to transition into a more traditional for-profit structure following public opposition.
