Abu Dhabi Imposes Dh100,000 Fines on Farms Involved in Crypto Mining

New crackdown targets unauthorized mining operations on agricultural land

Abu Dhabi’s Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has introduced a strict enforcement policy aimed at eliminating cryptocurrency mining from agricultural land. Farms found hosting mining operations will be fined Dh100,000, with repeat violations incurring penalties of Dh200,000. This move follows a series of inspections that uncovered widespread misuse of farmland for energy-intensive crypto activities.

The updated regulations mark a sharp escalation from the Dh10,000 fines introduced in 2024, reflecting a 900 percent increase. ADAFSA’s stance signals a firm commitment to preserving the integrity of agricultural resources and ensuring that farmland remains dedicated to its intended purpose.

Consequences Include Power Cuts and Equipment Seizures

Beyond financial penalties, violators will face additional sanctions. Farms engaged in unauthorized mining will lose access to government support programs, including subsidies and services. Authorities will also disconnect electricity and confiscate any mining equipment found on-site.

Both farm owners and tenants will be held accountable, regardless of who initiated the mining activity. ADAFSA has made it clear that these measures are non-negotiable and will be enforced rigorously to deter future violations.

Protecting Agriculture and Food Security

The crackdown is rooted in concerns over sustainability and food security. Agricultural land plays a vital role in supporting the region’s food supply, and diverting resources to crypto mining undermines this mission. Energy consumption from mining rigs places undue pressure on infrastructure that should be supporting crop cultivation and livestock care.

Officials warn that unauthorized use of farmland not only disrupts productivity but also introduces biosecurity risks. ADAFSA urges all stakeholders in the agricultural sector to remain compliant and focus on approved economic activities.

A Clear Message to Farmers and Tenants

The new enforcement regime sends a strong message to the farming community. ADAFSA is encouraging all agricultural participants to avoid non-agricultural ventures and maintain the sector’s sustainability. The authority will continue monitoring farms and take decisive action against those who violate the rules.

This initiative aligns with broader efforts to regulate digital assets and ensure responsible energy usage across the emirate.
